Mattress Firm: Aiding Sleep, or Schemes?

That’s right, folks. It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room: The Mattress Firm Conspiracy Theory.

Forget your basic Berenstain Bears Mandela effects – this next level conspiracy theory will make you say “Illuminati, who?”

If you’re not familiar with the Mattress Firm Conspiracy Theory, here’s a quick rundown (you can also watch the video Youtuber Shane Dawson made about it): Back in January, a Reddit user commented that they believed Mattress Firm, the largest specialty mattress retailer in the US is a money laundering company, according to Business Insider.

The Challenge of Being Female on the Internet

I had a friend request from myself.

Worse than the unsettling experience of receiving a friend request from you that you hadn’t sent was the fact that it wasn’t really surprising at all. Since, for the past week or two, I’d been occasionally contacted by a Goodreads account that was an exact copy of my own.

As someone who has discovered a love for rereading books I loved in childhood, I set a goal of rereading every Sarah Dessen book in 2018. As I finished another reread of the queen of middle school literature, I logged into Goodreads to update my review.

Before I did, I checked my notifications. And saw my own profile picture. My name, with the same lowercase E I use on my profiles.

“emma started following you.”

“emma commented on your review of The Moon and More.”

Easy Ways to Keep Up with the News

There was probably a time when keeping up with the news was easy. Back in the good ol’ days, when people read the Sunday paper and there was about as much space devoted to the Big Game as to politics as a concept.

Now, there are many reasons it is not easy at all. Such as: it constantly seems like the most insane event in the history of the world just took place, and then three minutes later something even crazier happens. Also, everything has been happening for so long and it’s so hard to catch up and does anyone know what Israel and Palestine comes down to or are we all just too scared to ask. Also also, the economy is so boring.

But there is one thing that makes it unbelievably easy, and that thing is in your hand or pocket or the space between your bed and the wall right now. It is called a smartphone, and it makes it impossible to believe that people ever managed to get their news exclusively from comically large stacks of paper with stories printed in size 8 Times New Roman once a week.

Here’s how I manage to keep up with the news and have bare minimum 18% comprehension on what it means, while also being the laziest individual on the planet Earth.

Doggy Digitalization

I remember the days when dogs were just dogs. Cute little animals that prance about filled with energy and brighten everyone’s day that spots them. When you wanted to see them you had to go outside to your backyard or the local park. But, now, like with everything, you no longer need to go outside to see these pups! There is a plethora of ways to see these dogs from dog spotting facebook page to Instagram pages filled with cute pups.

Dog Spotting Facebook Group

This is a glorious page filled with pictures of dogs all over the world! Some are sitting on the T, some are chilling in the common, and some are running through the beaches of the Caribbean. The fun of this page is one day if you run into one of these cute pups it’s kinda like you’ve run into a celebrity! What makes this page even more interesting, is that there’s a whole competitive edge behind it. There’s a whole list of rules that can be found on the page and yes people do take it seriously. They range from not posting a dog you know to no service dogs allowed. People get so serious that they even have a page to contest any alleged “bans” against you. This just goes to show the passion that people have for dogs.

Have you ever wondered how someone gets the wonderful gig of a dog walker? Did they just know the right people? Have the right doggy connections? No need to fret any longer because you don’t need an in anymore! You can become the dog walker you have always been meant to be by just signing up through wag! Of course you’ll have to pass a background check and have your info in the system, but I can’t imagine anything more worth it than quality time with a pup.

Insta Dogs

No longer is Instagram just for selfies taken in perfect lighting. It also can act as the perfect portal to dogs all over the world! No longer are you limited to seeing dogs in your neighborhood, by tapping a few buttons you can have access to dogs playing the waters of Cabo or walking the streets of London. Some of the cutest ones can be found on the pages puppiesforall or if you want to follow one specific dog I suggest Marine the dog! Screen Shot 2017-04-17 at 10.32.33 AMShe is so precious with her blonde locks and her post will really pull your heartstrings. One that really got to me was when Trump passed the Muslim ban and Marine was out with the protestors at the airport! Could you ask for more of a touching photo?

This is a lot like Wag, but instead of just walking the dogs you would get to take care of them! It’s a dog sitting website that lets you have access to tons of dogs in need of some love! This is wonderful if you are missing your little dog at home and just need some puppy love in your life again! Might have to commute a bit, but so worth it!

Dog internet personalities

Weratedogs twitter is a gem! You can’t but be happy when scrolling through their feed! They pair little funny blips about the dog pictured and give every dog a rating on a 1-10 scale, but of course they always rate above a 10 because every dog in the world is automatically a 10! One of the recent post they had was of a tiny little pug sticking its tongue out and said, “This is Kyle. He made a joke about your shoes, then stuck his tongue out at you. Uncalled for. Step the h*ck up Kyle. 11/10 would forgive” Come on, can you get better than that?

Sure, digitalization can be seen as this horrible monster that is taking over everything. But, in terms of dogs it seems to be only making things better! You know have access to dogs all over the world and little communities, like insta dogs and dog spotting, have popped up all over. I’m just grateful to know I am no longer alone in my obsession with dogs, I only have to click my phone open to find the other millions just like me.

Taylurking: Taylor Swift Takes Over Tumblr

Sometime last year, Taylor Swift got a Tumblr and I was skeptical. I didn’t think it was actually her. However,  I follow a few Swifties on Tumblr and they confirmed that it was indeed her official account.

As soon as the account was created, Taylor began interacting with her fans. By searching the Taylor Swift tag, she was able to follow her fans, like and reblog their posts and even reply to them or send them messages. This was really cool to see especially because I didn’t have too much respect for Taylor during her Red era. This was when she was receiving a lot of hate, because the media was buzzing about how she was always dating men and then writing songs about them. A lot of these rumors really affected my perception of her. Then, she joined Tumblr and released 1989 and I started to gain a lot more respect for her. Her Tumblr presence started to grow so much that her fans even gave an official name to it: Taylurking.

My first exposure to Taylurking came around the holidays. I saw posts surfacing that some fans had received replies from Taylor on some of their posts with the Santa emoji. More fans started to receive this reply and they started to realize Taylor was planning something big.

They were right. Taylor looked through the Tumblrs of some lucky fans and went shopping for them based on their interests. She packed the gifts up in boxes, wrote out cards and sent all of the goodies to her fans. She even went to a fan’s house to surprise her and her young son with gifts. For a more in depth look at what she did, as well as the reactions of her fans, check out this video.

It was such a kind thing for Taylor to do. She honestly could have just sent a bunch of fans money or concert tickets, but she decided to take the time to learn about them through their Tumblrs and send them personalized gifts she knew they would enjoy. I even read an article about how Taylor sent a watercolor painting to a super-fan named Rebekah Bortniker and paid $1,989 toward Rebekah’s student loans (album reference). Taylor knew that her fan was in college struggling with student loans, so she did her part to try to help her as much as she could.

Around Valentine’s Day, I saw rumors on Tumblr that Taylor was Taylurking again, this time with envelope and heart emojis for Valentine’s Day. I didn’t know if this was true, but then I saw a whole bunch of posts where people posted videos of themselves reacting and Taylor replied with such sweet notes.

I also saw a post where a fan told Taylor about a breakup and Taylor responded with advice as if they were old friends who talked all the time.

The playlist did it. I officially gained more respect for Taylor Swift than I knew what to do with. I also had a very strange desire to make her my best friend. I’ve seen celebrities interact with their fans and do sweet things for them before, but never quite like this. I may not be a Swiftie, but the amount of love I gained for Taylor after my look into Taylurking may as well label me as one.
